The What’s In My Headphones team was on hand at Leaders 1354 in downtown Chicago to speak with Kendrick Lamar before his show later that night at The Shrine Chicago. Kendrick has slowly but surely built himself as a certified rapper and his style has not allowed him to be boxed in with other rappers – I think this is why so many people can relate and appreciate his music. In our interview with him, we spoke to him about the song that people can get to know more about from, how his creative process has evolved since the first mixtape that he dropped at 16, his next project, #Section80, his major influences, how music saved his life and his prediction for the NBA playoffs…

I was lucky to have my cam on me as I got a chance to catch Yelawolf open up for the party that featured Supernatural killing some freestyles and GZA the Genius performing as well. Spitta headlined a concert last night at Reggie’s Rock Club in Chicago and totally took the concert to the next level. Performing songs from previous mixtapes, from the much anticipated Smokee Robinson…the crowd was super hyped to see the New Orleans native rock the show last night, knowing many of the songs that Spitta performed in his hour long set. After not having a big 2009, Blu has been coming on strong in dropping some good music since the beginning of the year. I dropped in at Blu & Exile’s concert at The Subterranean in Chicago and was able to catch some footage of their performance in addition to Tanya Morgan performing a couple of songs.
