The What’s In My Headphones team was on hand at Leaders 1354 in downtown Chicago to speak with Kendrick Lamar before his show later that night at The Shrine Chicago. Kendrick has slowly but surely built himself as a certified rapper and his style has not allowed him to be boxed in with other rappers – I think this is why so many people can relate and appreciate his music. In our interview with him, we spoke to him about the song that people can get to know more about from, how his creative process has evolved since the first mixtape that he dropped at 16, his next project, #Section80, his major influences, how music saved his life and his prediction for the NBA playoffs…

ADALESSON "THE BREAK UP" (MIXTAPE)

24 year old Chicago native, Adalesson is back with his third mixtape entitled The Break Up. This tape, preceded by Room for Growth and Supporting the Idea: Listenin’ for Breaks is, to me, his best work yet. This tape, a play on the movie “The Break Up” (Jennifer Aniston, Vince Vaughn) encompasses the ups and downs gone through in a relationship. Most of the intros and interludes are actually clips taken from the movie. It’s a very short tape, but each of the songs is composed well and the tape has a very cohesive flow.
His slogan is “The Laid Back Rapper” and he is just that. His voice goes so well with the beats he chose for the tape. He appreciates and samples all types of music. With this tape specifically, he showcases his musicality and lyrical ability. Adalesson’s music resembles a lot of the music that came out of the early 90’s(golden era rap). He’s something like a mix of Q-Tip, Blu and Mos Def.

While I was vacationing and taking in the sites of Los Angeles, I stopped through the Rock the Bells Launch Party as earlier in the night they announced the lineup and locations of the international tour that will take place in 4 U.S. cities this summer. I was lucky to have my cam on me as I got a chance to catch Yelawolf open up for the party that featured Supernatural killing some freestyles and GZA the Genius performing as well. Check it out as the Alabama Native and newly signed Interscope artist performs a couple joints from his highly acclaimed Trunk Muzik Mixtape for the LA crowd…

After not having a big 2009, Blu has been coming on strong in dropping some good music since the beginning of the year. I dropped in at Blu & Exile’s concert at The Subterranean in Chicago and was able to catch some footage of their performance in addition to Tanya Morgan performing a couple of songs. Tanya Morgan brings alot of energy to the stage and Blu brings lyricism that many in the Chicago crowd appreciated last night…Check out a couple joints by Blu – Simply Amazing, Blu Colla Workers, Move Yo Ass including a quick MPC set by Exile and after the jump Tanya Morgan performs So Damn Down and Hardcore Gentlemen…
